Japan Phone Verification (SMS & Voice): Requirements and How It Works

Japanese platforms use phone verification to confirm that a user controls the phone number associated with an account. There is no single verification method shared by all Japanese platforms. Depending on the platform and the specific verification flow, you may receive an SMS code, complete an automated voice verification, or call a designated number from the phone number registered to your account.

This guide explains the main Japan phone-verification methods, why verification can fail, and how requirements differ between major Japanese platforms.

If you already know which platform you need to verify, go directly to the platform guides below.

Quick Answer

Japan phone verification commonly uses three different mechanisms:

  • SMS verification: the platform sends a one-time code to the registered mobile number.
  • Automated voice verification: an automated phone call is used to provide an authentication code or complete part of the verification process.
  • Caller-ID authentication: you call a number displayed by the platform from the phone number registered to your account, and the platform confirms the incoming caller ID.

The correct method depends on the platform. There is no single type of Japanese phone number that is accepted for every service.

How Japan Phone Verification Works

1. SMS Verification

The platform sends a numeric one-time password to the mobile number entered or registered on the account. You enter that code on the website or app to complete verification.

Mercari, for example, uses SMS in its main phone-verification flow. Its current guidance states that fixed-line and 050 phone numbers cannot be used for new-registration phone verification.

2. Automated Voice Verification

Some Japanese platforms use an automated voice-call process instead of, or alongside, SMS. The exact process varies by platform.

Pokémon Center Online allows users to choose between SMS verification and automated voice verification. In its voice flow, the user calls the number shown on screen from the registered phone number and receives a six-digit verification code by automated voice.

Lawson Ticket uses a different voice flow for Lawson WEB member verification: an automated call provides an activation code to the registered Japanese mobile number.

3. Caller-ID Authentication

Caller-ID authentication does not require the user to receive and enter an SMS code. Instead, the platform displays a verification phone number and asks you to call it from the phone number registered to your account. The system confirms whether the incoming caller ID matches the registered number.

Ticket Pia, Tower Records Japan and ePlus use caller-ID authentication in their main account-verification flows.

Japan Phone Verification by Platform

The table below summarizes the main account-verification flows relevant to the services covered by GetSMS.CODES. Ticket delivery, mobile apps or other account-security actions may use different authentication methods.

Platform Main verification method Key requirement
Mercari Japan SMS OTP; phone verification may be offered if SMS is not received Main registration flow requires a mobile number capable of receiving SMS; fixed-line and 050 numbers are not accepted
Pokémon Center Online SMS or automated voice verification One phone number can be verified to one account; previously verified numbers may also be subject to reuse restrictions
SNKRDUNK SMS OTP New SMS verification also sets up two-step verification; a number already associated with another account may be rejected
Ticket Pia Caller-ID authentication The verification call must come from the registered phone number with caller ID available
Tower Records Japan Caller-ID authentication Supported mobile numbers and fixed-line numbers can be used; 050 IP-phone numbers are excluded
ePlus Caller-ID authentication The main ePlus service requires a Japanese domestic mobile phone, and the verification call must come from the registered number
Lawson Ticket Automated voice verification for Lawson WEB members Requires a Japanese domestic mobile number capable of receiving voice calls; other Lawson ticketing flows may use different authentication

Why platform-specific requirements matter: the same phone-number type can be accepted by one platform and rejected by another. For example, Tower Records accepts fixed-line numbers for its caller-ID authentication, while Mercari's main phone-verification flow requires a mobile number. Always check the specific platform before choosing a verification method.

Why Japan Phone Verification May Fail

  • The SMS code does not arrive: the number may not support the required SMS, the message may be delayed or filtered, or the platform may not accept that number type.
  • The number is rejected: the platform may restrict certain types of numbers, or the number may already be associated with another account.
  • Caller-ID authentication fails: the call may have been made from a different phone number, caller ID may be hidden, or the verification window may have expired.
  • Voice verification cannot be completed: the number may not be able to make or receive the required call, depending on the platform's verification flow.
  • The verification code has expired: SMS and voice codes are normally time-limited and may need to be requested again.

How to Choose the Correct Verification Option

Start with the platform you need to verify, not with the phone number.

  1. You know your platform: use the platform guide below to check its current verification mechanism and phone-number requirements.
  2. Your platform does not have a dedicated service: use the general Japan phone verification service and provide the platform name when ordering.
  3. You want to compare available services: browse our Japan phone verification services by platform.

Our verification services use dedicated Japanese numbers allocated to individual orders rather than public shared SMS inboxes. Acceptance still depends on the verification rules of the platform being used.

Japan Phone Verification FAQ

Do all Japanese platforms use SMS verification?

No. Japanese platforms use different methods including SMS codes, automated voice verification and caller-ID authentication. The correct method depends on the platform and verification flow.

What is caller-ID authentication?

The platform displays a verification phone number and asks you to call it from the phone number registered to your account. The platform checks whether the incoming caller ID matches the registered number.

Can I use a landline number?

It depends on the platform. Tower Records accepts fixed-line numbers for its phone verification, while Mercari and Lawson WEB member verification require supported mobile numbers.

Can I use a 050 or VoIP number?

Requirements vary by platform. Some Japanese platforms explicitly exclude certain IP-phone or 050 number types, while others have different rules. Check the platform-specific guide before ordering.

Can a phone number already used for verification be used again?

It depends on the platform. Some platforms restrict a verified phone number to one account or place restrictions on reusing a number that was previously verified.

Is phone verification the same as identity verification?

No. Phone verification confirms control of a phone number. Identity verification (本人確認) is a separate process that may require personal information or identity documents. Platform requirements vary by feature.
